Your trouble with 1'st gear, can besolved by adjusting the idle speed of the engine.
Turn the smal finger screw to a bit lower idle speed and try again - even one more time if necessary.
When you put it i 1'st gear, do it with a quick, not too powerfull kick. You have to get the feeling of it, to do it right.
